THE SPLIT BETWEEN MAMMALS AND REPTILES.

There's always been an arms race between reptiles and mammals. IT's like they both just spawned with only rage and hatred for each other. Unless you've been living under a rock, you'd know that's not true and in the permian, nobody knew what reptiles or mammals. That's because the split hadn't happened yet.

THE PERMIAN

The permian was home to the most deadly mass extinction ever- the end permian Triassic extinction. It also revolutionized animals and went extreme with new adaptions and 2 lineages which are present till right now. Before wwe delve into the split, let's talk a bit about the permian. The climate was hot and arid because of the supercontinent Pangea. the center was void of life because of the temperatures being comparable to that of an oven. there was still some life in the harsh deserts but it was only on the outskirts you would find life.

THE SPLIT

In the permian there was originally just one lineage but as the end of the permian neared, there were 2 distinct types of animals. sauropsids were the reptiles. they were cold blooded- usually- (looking at you dinosaurs). later sauropsids became Lepidosauromorpha Sauropsida. Then theres synapsids. That lead to what is the domanant liniage right now.
